Fill power ratings, which tell you how fluffy the comforter is, are generally in the 300-600 range. For a luxury comforter you should look for numbers well over 750. The higher the better.
Thread count is also a sign of quality. You should see numbers over the 250-300 range. The higher the thread count the better the stitching and the less chance of the down leaking out.
Finally, the cover material can be made of silk or even Egyptian cotton. These materials are some of the softest in existence.
To help protect any luxury comforter you should cover it with a duvet.
